Hi, Hello and How Are You?

Reading can take you global!

Hi, hello and how are you,
How are you, how are you.
Hi Hello and how are you,
How are you today?!

Now try repeating those lyrics to the tune of “London Bridge is Falling Down” and it will all make sense!

OK so you MAY just be wondering why I started this post with a Welcome Song you would expect to hear at a Children’s Rhyme Time session in a library.  Well, the truth of the matter is that I am in fact a librarian. A librarian who is somewhat good with singing all the songs in tune. And that is probably attributed to the unavoidable fact that I am also a musician. A brass musician.  A brass musician, I hear you ask? Think cornet, flugelhorn, trumpet. Yes, I play a brass instrument in a brass band and am also a librarian. I know, I’m crazy, right?!

Many people whom I have met find this a somewhat odd combination – working in what they perceive to be a “quiet space” yet willingly spending my spare time playing in what they also perceive to be a “loud noisy” musical group.  Need I tell you that this is definitely not the case?

Libraries are no longer the places of quiet where librarians “Shhhh” everyone.  They are now rapidly becoming community hubs, providing a vast array of services to every customer who walks through the doors.  Libraries, in fact, can sometimes be noisy!

Brass bands are not all loud and noisy either.  We can be quiet and gentle.  When a brass band plays a beautiful hymn properly, it always sends tingles up my spine. It is something one has to hear, to fully understand the power that a simple hymn played by a brass band beautifully can have.  I strongly recommend checking out “Benedictus (from the Armed Man)” performed by world renowned Cory Band.  Sends tingles up my spine every time.  Maybe I have good taste, or maybe I’m just a band tragic… I’ll let you decide!

Overall, my passions in life are Books and Music. I absolutely LOVE reading, I have been known to devour as many as 5 books in a day, my friends all believe I have an incurable appetite for books, and I believe they are correct with their assumptions. I surprise myself sometimes!  I also love music – I have been playing music for 15 years and what an amazing journey that has been and continues to be.

As you probably have guessed by now, I am an absolute NEWBIE to this whole notion of blogging.  As yet I don’t have a full idea of what this blog will be, but I do have a few ideas.  Nevertheless, it will contain all things related to reading, libraries, music and life curiosities.

I hope I don’t turn out to be another one of those mediocre bloggers that nobody bothers to read. I hope to be entertaining, informative, fun, bright and bubbly like my personality. Hence the name “The Humming Librarian” as I am always humming a tune or two whilst working amongst the books in the library!

As author Barbara Sher says, “You can learn new things at any time in your life if you’re willing to be a beginner.  If you actually learn to like being a beginner, the whole world opens up to you.
